Spring Privacy Checkup

Today, you depend on the convenience that digital technologies provide — smartphones, computers, video streaming and conferencing, social media platforms, email, and geo-mapping services. This convenience can come with a price, your privacy. If you participate in the digital world, then you have a digital profile of all your online activities. While much of the tracking can be for legitimate purposes (e.g., target marketing, making the user experience better, and making us more efficient), cybercriminals are also tracking and collecting your data. They may be able to see what you read, the music you listen to, or your travel activities. Your digital profile makes you a commodity worth a lot of money to both sell or promote services and products to you as well as to perform criminal attacks, like stealing your money, identity, and privacy. NC State wants to help support its pack to protect the privacy of themselves and their family and friends.

Join us for our community outreach at the Talley Student Center Union on Wednesday, April 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We will help you complete a  Spring Privacy Checkup and help you through the six steps you can take to protect your privacy:

  • Review mobile device privacy settings.
  • Review browser privacy settings.
  • Remove unnecessary apps on your mobile devices.
  • Use password managers to create strong passwords.
  • Secure your Wi-Fi with a password.
  • Use VPN when on public Wi-Fi.

Members of the Cybersecurity Awareness Team (CSAT), Dr. Anupam Das of the Wolfpack Security and Privacy Research Lab (WSPR), and WSPR graduate students will be onsite to answer your questions, provide guidance and help you to keep your life as private as you want. Play fun games and enter a raffle to win NC State merchandise too!
