Securing Your Mobile Data

Keep the data on your device safe!

After securing your physical device, make sure your data is protected by completing the procedures on this webpage.

Most of these procedures are not detailed. For detailed procedures, see your device manufacturer’s website.

NOTE:  In most cases, you can find and perform these procedures by searching for relevant keywords or phrases in your device settings.

Procedures

Secure the data on your device by completing the following procedures:

Assess Your Data Security Requirements

See the NC State Endpoint Protection Standard for details regarding any additional security controls you must comply with.

Encrypt Sensitive University Data

To protect sensitive university data on your device, use encryption software or the device’s built-in encryption options.

Back Up Your Data

Don’t rely on your device’s local storage; if the device is stolen or crashes, that data is gone. Instead, use a password-protected external drive or secure cloud storage.

Tip:  To prevent the loss of any data stored on your device, create an appointment to back up all data regularly, for example, once a day. Consider using multiple backup mechanisms. If you travel, take a portable backup device with you (carried separately and similarly secured).
